Den Gyldene Freden
Located in the Gamla Stan and founded in 1720, few restaurants master the classic Swedish dishes better than Den Gyldene Freden which translates as “The Golden Peace”. Try herring for the first course followed by Swedish meatballs. Once you have savored that delicate brown sauce, you will never go back to what many of us have associated with Swedish meatballs.
Prinsen
I first visited Prinsen several years ago and liked it enough to host a dinner party there recently. It was even better than I remember. The service was outstanding. The roe (fish eggs) were truly amazing. Next came the minced veal which was fantastic. After all that, no room for desert unfortunately.
Sallskapet, Stockholm
Sallskapet
Now for something special. Sallskapet is a private club only accessible either as a member via membership in a reciprocal club. The King and his son, Prince Carl Phillip, are members. The setting, service and food, as you might expect, were extraordinary. Don’t fear the fish. It does not get any better. The herring followed by smoked salmon will blow you away. The only possible downside is that Sallskapet is not open on the weekends. Also, they require a jacket and tie. But then again, if the King of Sweden walked into the bar would you want to be caught without a tie?
